Werther's Original nutrition: every sweet compared

Every Werther's Original product sold in the UK broken down by sweet and by bag, and checked against NHS daily reference intakes for children aged 4 to 17.

Werther's Original is a butter caramel, and that makes it nutritionally different from most of the sweet aisle. Where a gum or a tablet sweet is essentially sugar, a caramel made with cream and butter carries a real fat load — and much of it is saturated fat from the dairy. It is one of the few sugar confectionery brands where the fat figure is worth reading alongside the sugar.

The brand is marketed more towards adults than most confectionery, which affects how it is eaten rather than what is in it. Werther's tends to be kept in a bag, a drawer or a car and eaten singly over time rather than as a portion, which makes total intake harder to track than a bag finished in one sitting.

How Werther's products differ

The original hard candy is boiled sugar and glucose syrup with cream and butter. It dissolves slowly by design, which extends the time sugar is in contact with tooth enamel — a dental consideration distinct from the daily sugar total, and one that applies to any slowly dissolved sweet.

The soft caramels use the same base ingredients with higher moisture and fat content to produce a chewier texture. That raises the calorie figure per gram compared with the hard candy, while the sugar concentration stays broadly similar.

Filled and chocolate-coated variants add a further layer of sugar and fat on top of the caramel base. These carry the highest figures in the range for both nutrients, and the difference from the plain original is larger than the shared name suggests.

Sugar-free variants replace sugar with sweeteners while retaining the cream and butter. The free sugar figure drops to effectively zero; the fat and calorie figures fall by much less, because the fat content is unchanged.
