Butterkist nutrition: calories, sugar and salt compared

Every Butterkist product in our database broken down by calories, sugar, salt and saturated fat, and checked against NHS daily reference intakes for children aged 4 to 17.

Popcorn is judged on sugar or salt depending on the variety, and the two versions of the same brand can sit at opposite ends. Toffee and sweet popcorn carry substantial free sugar; salted popcorn carries salt and very little else.

Sweet versus salted

Toffee, caramel and sweet popcorn are coated in sugar syrup, which is where almost all the calories and sugar arrive. Plain salted popcorn carries a fraction of the sugar and more salt.

Air-popped and lightly salted varieties are among the lower calorie savoury snacks available, which is what makes the coated versions such a contrast.

Bag size drives the total

Sharing bags and tubs carry several times what a single portion bag does, and popcorn has no natural stopping point.

A stated serving is usually around 25g, which is a small handful rather than the bowlful most people pour.
