Maoam nutrition: every sweet compared

Every Maoam product sold in the UK broken down by sweet and by bag, and checked against NHS daily reference intakes for children aged 4 to 17.

Maoam is a chewy fruit-flavoured sweet brand owned by Haribo, sold in individually wrapped pieces and in sharing bags. The wrapped format is worth noting: it makes each piece easy to count but also easy to eat in sequence, and a handful of small wrapped sweets adds up faster than the size of any single one suggests.

The chew format is what separates Maoam nutritionally from a gummy sweet. Chews contain fat in the base, which gives them their texture and raises the calorie figure per gram above that of a gelatine-based gummy carrying similar sugar. It is one of the few places in sugar confectionery where the fat figure is worth reading at all.

All the sugar is free sugar. The fruit names describe flavouring rather than fruit content — there is no whole fruit, no fibre and no nutritional contribution beyond the energy.

How Maoam sweets differ

The base across the range is sugar, glucose syrup and a vegetable fat. That combination produces the chew, and the nutritional profile per gram is broadly consistent whatever the flavour or shape.

Piece size and format drive the difference. Individually wrapped bars, small cubes and pouches of loose pieces carry very different amounts per unit, and the wrapped formats in particular are eaten several at a time rather than singly.

Sour and coated variants add a citric acid and sugar coating to the outside of the piece. That raises the free sugar figure slightly above the equivalent uncoated sweet, and the acidity is a separate dental consideration — acid erosion of enamel is a distinct issue from sugar and decay.

Fat content sets the calorie figure apart. Two sweets with the same sugar per gram will differ in calories if one is a chew and one is a gummy, which is why comparing across confectionery types on sugar alone gives an incomplete picture.
