Maynards Bassetts nutrition: every sweet compared

Every Maynards Bassetts sweet sold in the UK broken down by sweet and by bag, and checked against NHS daily reference intakes for children aged 4 to 17.

Maynards Bassetts covers some of the oldest sweet names in Britain. The two brands merged in 2016 and now sit together as one range, which means products with very different textures, ingredients and nutritional profiles share a single name on the shelf.

All the sugar in these sweets counts as free sugar. There is no whole fruit content and no fibre, and the fruit names on the packaging describe flavouring rather than ingredients. What varies across the range is not whether the sugar counts, but how much of it a single sweet carries — and that depends almost entirely on the size and density of the piece.

How Maynards Bassetts sweets differ

The gum and pastille lines are built on sugar, glucose syrup and a gelling agent. The firmness that separates a wine gum from a softer jelly comes from the gelling agent and the moisture content rather than from any difference in sugar concentration, so two very different-feeling sweets can carry near-identical figures per gram.

The layered and multi-component lines are the exception. Where a sweet combines a paste, a fondant layer and a coating, the nutritional profile varies between pieces in the same bag — which is why a per-sweet average is more useful than a single figure for the product as a whole.

Piece size drives everything. These sweets are eaten by the handful rather than singly, and the difference between a small gum and a large jelly is several grams of sugar per piece. A per-100g figure, which is what most nutrition labels lead with, tells you very little about what a child has actually eaten.

Fat and protein are negligible across the range. Unlike chocolate or chews, sugar confectionery of this type carries almost no fat, so the calorie figure tracks the sugar figure closely and the two can be read together.
