How many ingredients are in a Big Mac?+

53 across the whole burger, of which Boone classes 24 as manufactured. The beef patty is a single ingredient; the rest comes from the bun, the sauce, the cheese and the pickles.

Is the McPlant more processed than a beef burger?+

By ingredient count, yes. Boone records the McPlant at 83 ingredients against 53 for a Big Mac and 39 for a Hamburger Happy Meal. It is the longest ingredient list Boone has recorded anywhere on the McDonald's UK menu.

How does Boone decide which ingredients are manufactured?+

Boone uses the NOVA group 4 criteria: additive classes such as colours, emulsifiers, stabilisers, thickeners, preservatives, flavourings and sweeteners, together with industrial substrates such as glucose syrup, maltodextrin, modified starch, hydrolysed proteins and isolated gums. Whole foods and simple culinary ingredients are not counted.

Longer than most people expect. Boone ranks the Sweet and Smoky BBQ Dip at 20 ingredients, ahead of every dessert except the Galaxy Caramel McFlurry. A sachet added without thinking carries more ingredients than a McFlurry.

What is the difference between a plain latte and a flavoured one?+

Boone records a plain Latte at 3 ingredients with none classed as manufactured, and a Toffee Latte at 22, of which 11 are. The milk and coffee are identical; the syrup accounts for the entire difference.

Why does Boone count ingredients rather than just naming additives?+

Because the number is comparable. Naming additives tells you what is present; counting them lets Boone rank 151 items against each other and show which parts of the menu carry the longest lists. Boone publishes both the total and the manufactured count so the two can be read separately.
