Boone classes an ingredient as manufactured when it only exists as an output of industrial processing: additive classes such as colours, emulsifiers, thickeners, preservatives and flavourings, and industrial ingredients such as corn syrup, maltodextrin, modified starch and protein isolates. Whole foods and kitchen staples such as flour, sugar, salt and oil count as raw.

Why are US ingredient lists longer than UK ones?+

US component lists name more sub-ingredients, such as the vitamins added to enriched flour, and US recipes use more corn syrups, gums and preservatives. Boone counts the two markets the same way, so the difference reflects the recipes and how they are declared.

Where does Boone get its ingredient data?+

Boone uses the McDonald’s USA product pages, read per component as the item is assembled, checked in September 2026. Obvious spelling errors on the published lists are corrected before counting.

Ingredient counts are distinct named ingredients from McDonald’s USA published component lists, including sub-ingredients, with duplicates removed, so salt appearing in four components counts once. Ice and water added at the counter are not counted.
