Butter and spreads: saturated fat per serving

Every butter and spread broken down by realistic serving, with saturated fat compared against NHS daily reference intakes for children and adults.

Spreads are used in quantities far smaller than 100g, so per-100g figures overstate the case dramatically. What matters is what goes on two slices of toast.

Butter, margarine and blends

Butter is roughly half saturated fat. Vegetable oil spreads carry similar total fat but substantially less saturated, which is the main nutritional difference between them.

Reduced-fat spreads replace fat with water, so they carry fewer calories per gram but are also less suited to cooking.

Serving size in practice

A stated serving is usually around 10g, which is a thin scrape. Butter spread generously on two slices can be double that.

Salted and unsalted versions differ meaningfully on salt but not on fat. For children, unsalted is the simpler default.
