Cheese: salt, saturated fat and calcium by portion

Every cheese broken down by a realistic 30g portion, with salt and saturated fat compared against NHS daily reference intakes for children and adults.

Cheese is a genuine source of protein and calcium and simultaneously one of the saltiest everyday foods. Both things are true, and the portion size decides which matters more.

The 30g portion is smaller than most people cut

A stated 30g portion is roughly the size of a small matchbox. Cheese cut by hand is routinely double that, which doubles every figure on the label.

Grated cheese is harder still to judge. A handful over a pasta bake can be 50g or more without looking like much.

Salt varies more than fat between styles

Hard and blue cheeses concentrate salt during production and sit well above soft cheeses. Halloumi and feta are among the saltiest available.

Processed and spreadable cheeses add emulsifying salts, so they can exceed harder cheeses on salt despite tasting milder. Reduced-fat versions rarely reduce salt.
