Every Nestlé cereal sold in the UK broken down by portion size and milk type, checked against NHS daily free sugar limits for children aged 4 to 17.
Nestlé is one of the UK's most widely stocked breakfast cereal brands. The products range from the most minimally processed cereal on the mainstream market to some of the highest-sugar options available. What they share is a shelf, a brand name and, in most cases, a whole grain base.
A 30g bowl of Shredded Wheat Bitesize contains 0.2g of free sugar. The same size bowl of Chocapic contains 8.4g. Both are Nestlé cereals. Both are made from whole grain wheat. The difference in free sugar is more than fortyfold.
Nestlé cereals span a wider processing spectrum than most cereal brands. At one end, Shredded Wheat and Shredded Wheat Bitesize are made from a single ingredient — 100% whole grain wheat — with no added sugar, no added salt and no flavourings. At the other end, Chocapic combines a whole grain wheat and oat base with a heavy chocolate coating, added sugar and industrial shaping and coating processes.
Most Nestlé cereals retain the bran and germ layers of the grain, which is why fibre content across the range is generally higher than the Kellogg's range. Shreddies Original delivers 10g of fibre per 100g. Cheerios Original delivers 7g. Even Chocapic at 5g per 100g outperforms most refined grain cereals.
Unlike Shredded Wheat products, every other cereal in the Nestlé range is fortified with the same added vitamins and minerals during manufacturing. A 30g bowl provides 50% of the Reference Intake for vitamin D and 25% for five B vitamins alongside a contribution of iron.
Each product page includes a full nutrition breakdown per bowl at four portion sizes, age-adjusted NHS daily free sugar limit calculations for children aged 4 to 17, an interactive calculator for your child's specific age and milk type, and a complete guide to fibre, protein, salt and fortification.
