Chocolate is the category where fat and sugar arrive together, and where the format on the shelf matters more than the recipe inside it.
Milk chocolate is, by composition, mostly sugar and milk solids with a relatively low cocoa content. That is what makes it sweet, and it is why the free sugar figure per gram is high. But roughly half the calories come from fat rather than sugar, mainly cocoa butter and milk fat, both largely saturated. Reading the sugar line alone misses most of what a bar delivers.
The same chocolate sold as a fun-size piece, a standard bar, a duo and a sharing block differs several-fold in everything. Sharing formats are routinely eaten by one person in one sitting, and tubs and pouches of miniatures have no natural stopping point at all.
Individually wrapped miniatures create a specific problem. Each piece looks negligible, the count is easy to lose, and a handful across an evening can exceed a standard bar without ever feeling like one. A per-piece figure is only useful alongside an honest count.
Higher cocoa content means less sugar per gram and more cocoa solids, which carry small amounts of fibre, iron and magnesium. It does not mean fewer calories. Dark chocolate is frequently equal to or higher than milk chocolate in energy, because the sugar removed is replaced by cocoa butter.
Dark chocolate is a lower-sugar food, not a low-calorie one. It also carries more caffeine and theobromine than milk chocolate, both stimulants, and children are more sensitive to them by body weight than adults are. A high-cocoa bar late in the day is worth thinking about for that reason as much as any other.
Caramel, fudge and fondant centres usually carry more sugar per gram than the chocolate around them, because the filling is sweeter than the coating. Wafer and aerated products contain less chocolate per gram than a solid bar, which lowers both the sugar and the calorie figure relative to the size of the product.
Where nuts are present there is a genuine nutritional contribution, protein, unsaturated fat and micronutrients, which is the only meaningful nutrition anywhere in this category. It comes with a higher calorie figure attached, and with an allergen worth noting on anything given to a child.
A small part of the sugar in milk chocolate is lactose from milk solids, which does not count as free sugar. It is a minor share, and the great majority of the sugar in any milk chocolate product is added sugar counting in full toward the daily limit of 19g for children aged 4 to 6, 24g for ages 7 to 10, and 30g from 11 upwards.
White chocolate contains no cocoa solids at all, only cocoa butter, sugar and milk. It carries none of the iron, magnesium or fibre that comes with cocoa, and it is typically the highest-sugar option in any range.
