Ready meals: calories, salt and saturated fat by pack

Every ready meal broken down by pack rather than per 100g, with what the portion label actually means and where the salt comes from.

Ready meals are judged on salt before anything else. A single pack can carry most of an adult's 6g daily limit, and the limit for a child aged 7 to 10 is 5g, for a 4 to 6 year old 3g. One meal can use the lot.

The per-100g figure hides the pack

Ready meal packs range from roughly 300g to over 800g, so two products with identical per-100g figures can differ by half again in what you actually eat. The per-pack number is the only one that answers the question.

Packs labelled as serving two are the specific trap. They are routinely eaten by one person, which doubles every figure on the label without anyone noticing the label said otherwise.

Where the salt and saturated fat come from

Cured meats, stock, cheese and soy-based sauces drive the salt. Creamy and cheese sauces drive the saturated fat, and sit far above tomato-based equivalents even when calories are similar.

Rice and pasta bases raise the carbohydrate load but not usually the salt. A curry with rice included is often lower in salt per pack than a smaller pasta bake, because the rice dilutes rather than adds.
